Chess is one of the greatest traditional board games you will ever play. The allure of chess is the almost endless level of difficulty and strategy that you can face as you move up the ranks and face increasingly skilled opponents.
Regardless of your age or skill level, you can find opponents to play and challenges to face. It definitely is a game for all ages.
Of course, as a novice, you'll find it frustrating to play chess with advanced players, especially as you're starting to learn the basic moves. You can, however practice on an electronic opponent until you learn the common moves. There are plenty of online services or computer-based games that you can try to increase your skill level.
Speaking for myself, I greatly prefer a 3-D layout, so I usually play on a chess game computer when I want to play by myself. There are many good electronic chess sets that can increase in difficulty level as you get better, which is a strength that they hold; and they also double as an objective measure of your skill level at the game. Many boards will even calculate a ranking for you based on your rate of play and how skilled your moves are.
As you begin to play against these virtual opponents, your aim is to learn the board, learn the assorted moves of each chess piece, and learn the basic defense and attack strategies.
Once you've mastered the basic movements of each piece, and you can construct move sequences without saying to yourself "okay, two squares up and one square over," you're ready to tackle a real player.
So find yourself an entry-level chess board games, locate an opponent, and start learning one of the world's oldest and best games.
The unlimited variations in game play make chess a terrific game choice for the whole family.
